The name Mount Edelstone, translating from the German "Edelstein" meaning "gemstone," refers to small yellow opals once found in the area. The Mount Edelstone vineyard was established in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded The South Australian Company and played a key role in South Australia's development. Unusually for its time, the vineyard was exclusively planted with Shiraz. The vineyard's ancient 500-million-year-old geology has created deep red-brown clay-loam to clay soils, resulting in low yields from the dry-grown, ungrafted century-old vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952 by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke, Mount Edelstone was already recognized as one of Australia's premier Shiraz wines by the time Cyril purchased the vineyard from Colin Angas in 1974.
The 2009 Mount Edelstone has a deep garnet-purple hue and offers youthful, subdued aromas. Primary scents of black cherries, crème de cassis, and violets are accentuated by hints of allspice and fennel seed. This full-bodied wine is rich and concentrated, with dense fruit framed by medium to firm grainy tannins and vibrant acidity. It maintains a lovely balance through its very long finish.
