2017 Greenock Creek Mataro 750ml

Imagine resting your head in a historic, character-packed Spanish villa. The rustic, sun-soaked kind overlooking an overgrown garden full of fruit trees and promise. This dry grown Mataro is as close as you’ll get without the plane ticket. There’s a savoury edge to its delivery; a bowl of cereal topped with fresh cut plums, plucked from a nearby orchard. Black olive aromas whisper on the wind and the faint whiff of muscatels adds to the mix. A whirlwind of red and black berries and star anise follows. The composition is chunky, like the old stone steps leading the way to the village at the top of the hill. "This dry grown version of Mataro is dark and brooding with cranberries and anise intertwined with earthy and roasted meat notes. Typically rustic, almost metallic in structure the wild forest berries flow through the palate with underlying tar and molasses richness.

As always this is what I like to call a funky wine. Not in a bad way mind you, but a wine that is less about the fruit profile and more about the secondary earthy/meaty characters. Too often lost in GSM blends, it is great that we can showcase a true Mouvedre for you.�/p>
