WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS High Sands Grenache is the pinnacle of our estate. Reaching deep within the sandy soil, our prized 1946 old vines produce wines that balance intense power and complexity with fragrance and beauty.
AROMA Perfumed, powerful and pristine with vibrant red berry fruit.
PALATE Cherries, rose petal, clove, white spice, pomegranate seeds. Complex minerality with elegant, sculpted tannins.
FOOD MATCHING Kangaroo tartare, all spice, parsley, lemon, chilli, free range egg and potato crisps or Roast duck with cherries.
GRAPES/BLEND 100% Grenache Noir.
VINIFICATION Sourced exclusively from our special Block 31 (1.7 Ha). At 210m elevation, this is the highest section of the 1946 planted bush vine Grenache, which also has the deepest sandy soil. Our small yields were hand-picked 6th of March and mechanically sorted. 50% whole berries were destemmed and placed in open fermenters, with a long, gentle maceration for a minimum of 21 days. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine.
MATURATION 11 months.
Critic tasting note: "2017 was a comparatively cool vintage, which has ramped up the elegance and freshness factor on Yangarra's most premium and renowned wine. Compared with the raw beauty and pure joy of the Ovitelli Grenache (which is half the price), this is a more polished wine, set for time in the cellar but also drinking beautifully now. The floral characteristics shine alongside brambly fruit and soft savory, mineral aromas. The palate is open-knit, with juicy berries washing over the tongue, followed by a tug of highly textural and precise tannins. Drink now030. Christina Pickard" -95/100,Wine Enthusiast
