The 2019 Vintage
The growing season was marked by a consistently warm to hot summer without significant rainfall, accompanied by wind and hail during the flowering period, and followed by three major frosts. These challenging conditions led to an earlier and considerably smaller harvest than usual. The result was smaller clusters of intensely dark berries with thick, fleshy skins and mature brown stalks. Despite the reduced yields, once the grapes began fermenting in our cellar, the 2019 vintage revealed a remarkable concentration of color, tannin, and aroma.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep crimson color with a brilliant hue. It embodies poise and nobility, sourced from some of the world’s oldest living Shiraz vines. The complex nose is dominated by red berry fruits like red currant, red cherry, and cassis, enhanced by savory notes of wild thyme, garrigue, graphite, and sandalwood. On the palate, it offers a wonderful textural mouthfeel with soft, round tannins and cleansing acidity. This balance imparts a modern Barossa elegance, combined with the power derived from the extremely low-yielding vines. This wine honors its heritage and the 19th-century vision for grape growing and dry farming.
Enjoy this wine starting in 2026, and it can be cellared until 2050 or beyond. Serve at 16°C (60°F) with game, poultry, or tuna steaks.
