The 2016-2017 growing season was generally good though reduced yields due to the below-average rainfall. After recovering from the late frosts in 2013 the quality of the grapes is enhanced by the reduced volume. A warm ripening period with cooler nights allows for long ripening periods with aromatic floral development.
Picked when the grapes showed maximum flavour and colour. Small batch fermentation with close attention paid to cap management to avoid extracting harsh, bitter tannins. As the ferments proceeded, pumping-over and mixing operations were carried out to get the best out of the variety without too much intervention. After pressing, maturation took place in American and French hogsheads for over 18 months.
The 2017 Massoni Shiraz gives a complex mix of violet florals and blackcurrant characteristics on the nose. Longer ripening periods and cool nights allow these floral characters to develop whilst maintaining fruit concentration. The length of oak maturation underpins the aroma adding complexity and depth. In the glass, the concentration of colour reflects the palate of the wine, typical of Massoni Shiraz. Blackcurrant and dark floral notes continue throughout the length of the palate with complex tannins to complete the mouthfeel. Ready to enjoy now or cellar for 5 to 10 years.
