In 1909, Alexander Cowie used his most rare and special aged stock to create his own private release â€?a whisky he called Cowie’s Blue Seal, a symbol representing the utmost quality.
The barrels he chose were what he considered the best of the best - the select few among the brilliant Mortlach reserves. These were the stocks he deemed worthy of the “Blue Seal.â€?/p>
Today, we’ve resurrected the symbol of the Blue Seal to mark the 20 year old release. This rich and beautiful single malt whisky is made from the barrels deemed to be of exceptional quality from the Mortlach reserves. A combination of Refill Casks with ex-Sherry casks allows the rich, robust spirit of the beast of Dufftown to come through, while growing in complexity and mellowing over 20 years to an elegant, balanced combination of pepper and cinnamon spice with smooth, mellow vanilla oak.
Intensely flavoursome stuff, as we've come to expect from Mortlach.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Roast chestnuts and tobacco, swiftly joined by dense chocolate and red berry richness. Just a whisper of meaty malt underneath.
Palate:
Clove and brandy butter arrive first, before chewy dates, orange peel, mature oak and Hobnob biscuits.
Finish:
Lasting Christmas spice and a touch of cooked summer berries.
